Frequently Asked Questions

Why Choose Barkn’licious all natural treats & toppers?

We’re not a pet warehouse — every batch is small, fresh, and made with care. Our treats are all natural, grain-free, single-ingredient, and made from 100% Australian proteins.

Our Meal Toppers are crafted from wholesome ingredients with no grains, fillers, or preservatives — just a tasty, nutritious boost to make every meal more enjoyable.

(Plus, yes… we love slipping Free Treats into every order!)

How are your treats made?

We gently air dry our treats and meal toppers at a maximum of 75°C using commercial dehydrators to retain maximum flavour and nutrients. Many competitors use higher temperatures to speed up production but can drastically reduce nutritional value.

Do you make your own treats & toppers?

Yes! All treats and toppers are made in small batches in Melbourne, ensuring freshness and quality in every bite. The only exception is our seafood range, sourced from a local, accredited supplier using sustainably caught Australian seafood — the same trusted source used by many other all natural treat sellers.

What’s the difference between air-dried, dehydrated, and freeze-dried treats?

Air-dried (or low-heat dehydrated) treats are gently dried at low temperatures to lock in nutrients, flavour, and natural texture. They stay firm enough for a slow, satisfying chew that supports dental health and keeps dogs mentally engaged—making them a treat dogs truly enjoy.

Freeze-dried treats are quickly frozen and dried under vacuum, preserving most nutrients, but they are very light and brittle, breaking apart easily and offering less chewing satisfaction than air-dried treats.

What’s the shelf life of your products?

Our all natural treats and toppers are free from preservatives, artificial additives, sugars, and salts, so proper storage is key. Keep products sealed in a cool, dry, and dark place to maintain freshness.

Treats: Best enjoyed within 6 months.

Meal Toppers: Use within 12 weeks of opening for optimal freshness.

Should I add a meal topper to my dog’s food?

Yes! Our meal toppers add extra flavour, protein, and essential vitamins to your dog’s bowl. They’re a perfect way to entice fussy eaters, turning an ordinary meal into something your dog looks forward to.

Toppers complement a balanced diet, bringing both nutrition and enjoyment to every bite. Explore our Meal Topper Range here.

Are meal toppers suitable for puppies or senior dogs?

Absolutely. Our all natural, grain free meal toppers are perfect for puppies and older dogs. They provide extra vitamins, minerals, and protein to support growth, mobility, and overall wellbeing.

Can I mix different meal toppers?

Yes! Rotating or combining toppers introduces new flavours and nutrients, keeping meal time exciting. Just be sure to follow recommended serving sizes to avoid overfeeding.

Do dogs need dental chews?

Yes! Dental chews reduce plaque and tartar, strengthen teeth, and support healthy gums.

Chewing is also mentally stimulating. Regular dental chews can prevent costly vet visits, making them a simple, enjoyable way to care for your dog’s smile and overall health.

Our all natural dental chews also provide extra nutrients and protein, so your dog gets a tasty, healthy boost while keeping their teeth and gums in top condition. Explore our Dental Treats Range here.

Can dogs have bones?

Yes! Raw bones can be a great natural chew, but avoid weight-bearing, cooked, or smoked bones—they can fracture teeth, splinter, and cause serious harm. Our air-dried treats with bone crumble instead of splintering, providing a safer option while also delivering calcium and essential minerals.

What are allergy‑friendly treats for dogs?

Many store-bought treats contain multiple ingredients, fillers, and artificial additives that can trigger digestive or allergic reactions. Our treats use a single, natural protein source and are free from grains, preservatives, sugars, and artificial additives—perfect for sensitive dogs.

Research shows that beef (≈34 %) and chicken (≈15 %) are the most common allergy triggers, while lamb, fish, pork, and other “novel” proteins are less likely (<10 %). Choosing a single, less common protein can help reduce the risk of intolerance. Always consult your vet before introducing new treats to dogs with allergies. Explore our Allergy Friendly Treats Range here.

Are pig ears good for dogs?

Yes! Pig ears are a natural, high-protein chew that many dogs adore. They help satisfy natural chewing instincts and can support dental health. Our air-dried pig ears are long-lasting, flavorful, and packed with essential nutrients for a wholesome snack.

Are liver treats good for dogs?

Absolutely. Liver treats are nutrient-dense, packed with vitamins A, B, and iron, making them a great training reward or nutritional supplement. Because liver is very rich, keep servings to under 5% of your dog’s daily diet.

Can you help with doggy party ideas?

Absolutely, you've come to the right place! We offer a variety of Treat Gift boxes, dog party favours and treat sharing platters for any special doggy occasion. For doggy party ideas, read our Ultimate Doggy Birthday Party Planning Guide blog here.

Best treats for my dog?

Choosing the right treat depends on your dog’s size, age, chewing ability, and dietary needs:

  • Gentle Treats: chicken jerky, chicken giblet, gummy chews — gentle on teeth, perfect for puppies, seniors, or dogs with sensitive jaws.
  • Dental Treats: beef tendon, bully sticks, shark cartilage — satisfy natural chewing instincts, reduce plaque, and keep dogs mentally stimulated.
  • Training Treats: beef liver, chicken liver, sardines — ideal for picky eaters or dogs needing extra nutrition.
  • Seafood Treats: sardines, shark jerky, fish toppers — rich in omega-3 fatty acids, supporting healthy skin, coat, joints, and overall wellbeing.
  • Hypoallergenic Treats: fish, pork, lamb — suitable for dogs prone to sensitivities or food allergies.

What treats are good for puppies?

Depending on your puppy’s age and chewing ability, start with soft and chewy treats like chicken jerky, sardine, or chicken giblet—gentle on developing teeth. For natural chewing instincts and dental health, offer chews such as bully sticks, gummy chews, or ling fish twists.

Are air dried treats good for puppy training?

Yes! Air-dried treats are nutrient-dense, easy to break into small pieces, and highly palatable, making them ideal for training sessions and positive reinforcement. Their flavour and texture keep puppies engaged and motivated.

What treats are good for senior dogs?

We offer a variety of treats packed with protein and minerals that aging dogs need. Choose options that are gentle on older jaws, and pair them with our Nutritional Meal Toppers for an extra boost to help keep them energized and support overall vitality.

How much treats can I give my dog?

Our treats aren’t just tasty snacks—they’re packed with high-quality protein, essential vitamins, minerals, and omegas to support your dog’s overall health. There’s no strict limit, but treats should complement a complete and balanced diet.

Think of them as nutritional boosters between meals—perfect for rewarding good behavior, supporting dental health, or simply because they’re delicious!

Tip: Liver is very nutrient-dense but rich, so keep it to less than 5% of your dog’s daily diet.
