The Ultimate Guide to Dog Meal Toppers: Benefits, Nutrition & How to Choose the Right One

If you've got a fussy eater at home, or a dog who could use a little extra nutritional boost, meal toppers might just be the easiest win in your dog's diet β€” and one of the most underrated. A sprinkle here, a spoonful there, and suddenly dinner time goes from "sniff and walk away" to bowl licked clean.

We get asked about meal toppers all the time, so we thought it was time to put together a proper guide: what they are, why they work, and how to choose the right one for your dog.

What Exactly Is a Meal Topper?

A meal topper is exactly what it sounds like β€” a natural, flavour-packed addition you sprinkle over your dog's regular food to boost taste, nutrition, or both. Think of it as the difference between a plain dinner and one with all the good bits mixed in.

Unlike treats (which are for rewarding and snacking) or complete meals (which are designed to provide balanced nutrition on their own), toppers are made to enhance what your dog is already eating β€” not replace it. Whether your dog's diet is kibble, raw, wet food or home-cooked meals, a teaspoon or two mixed through can make a world of difference to how excited they are about mealtime.

Why Add a Topper to Your Dog's Meal?

For fussy eaters. This is the big one. Even a well-balanced diet can become repetitive from your dog's point of view, especially for naturally picky eaters or dogs going through a fussy phase. A meal topper adds real flavour and aroma without changing what they're already eating.

For extra nutrition. Many of our toppers are made from nutrient-dense ingredients like liver and fish, naturally rich in protein, vitamins, minerals and healthy fats that complement your dog's regular diet.

For skin, coat and joint support. Fish-based toppers are naturally rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which help support healthy skin, a shiny coat and normal joint function. Omega-3s may also support brain health and your dog's natural anti-inflammatory processes, making them a great everyday addition for puppies, adults and senior dogs alike.

For variety without changing their whole diet. Rotating protein sources is a simple way to add variety to your dog's meals. If your dog regularly eats one type of protein, introducing different proteins through meal toppers can help keep mealtimes interesting while broadening their nutritional variety.

For dogs on prescription or sensitive diets. If your dog is eating a veterinarian-recommended diet, a topper can make mealtime much more appealing while still allowing you to follow your vet's feeding recommendations.

How to Choose the Right Topper for Your Dog

Consider protein rotation. Beef and chicken are among the proteins most commonly associated with food sensitivities in dogs. If your dog's regular diet already contains plenty of chicken or beef, adding a fish, duck or pork-based topper is an easy way to introduce some variety.

Think about your dog's life stage and needs.

  • Puppies and active dogs generally benefit from protein-rich toppers to support growth and muscle maintenance.
  • Senior dogs often benefit from omega-3-rich fish toppers, which support healthy ageing, joint mobility and cognitive function.
  • Fussy or sensitive eaters often respond well to highly aromatic, single-ingredient toppers such as liver.

Watch the richness. Liver is incredibly nutritious β€” naturally rich in vitamin A, B vitamins and iron β€” but it's also very rich. We recommend feeding liver-based toppers in moderation, generally keeping them below around 5% of your dog's overall daily diet.

How to Use a Meal Topper

Most of our meal toppers follow a simple guide: one teaspoon per 100g of food.

As a guide:

  • 100g bag: approximately 25 servings
  • 240g bag: approximately 60 servings
  • 500g bag: approximately 125 servings

Even our smallest bag goes much further than most people expect.

Whenever introducing any new food, start with a small amount and gradually increase over a few days while monitoring your dog. If your dog has known allergies, medical conditions or is on a veterinary-prescribed diet, we recommend speaking with your veterinarian before making changes to their diet.

The Bottom Line

Meal toppers are one of the simplest ways to make every meal a little more exciting. Whether you're encouraging a fussy eater, adding nutritional variety, supporting healthy skin and coat, or simply giving your dog something extra to look forward to each day, there's a topper in our range to suit.
