Natural Dog Treats Melbourne: Where to Buy Healthy, Air-Dried Treats
Share
Looking for natural dog treats in Melbourne? Don't stop at the word natural on the packet.
Look at what's actually in the treat, where the protein comes from, how it's made, and whether the size and texture suit your dog.
At Barkn'licious Dog Treats, we're a Melbourne family-run business specialising in all-natural, single-ingredient dog treats made from Australian proteins. Our handcrafted range is gently air-dried at no more than 75Β°C, with a simple philosophy: keep the ingredients simple, take care with the little details, and make treats we'd happily give our own dog.
Here's what we think is worth knowing before you choose your dog's next treat.
1. Start With What's Actually in the Treat
For a single-ingredient dog treat, there should only be 1 ingredient on the label and it should be easy to understand what you're buying.
Beef Liver is beef liver. Sardines are sardines. Chicken Feet are chicken feet.
No long ingredient list filled with words you don't understand. No artificial colours or flavours. No fillers added to turn a piece of meat into something else.
That's one of the reasons we love single-ingredient treats: you know exactly what you're feeding your dog.
When comparing natural dog treats, check:
- Ingredients: What is actually in the treat?
- Protein source: Is the meat or seafood clearly identified?
- Origin: Do you know where the protein comes from?
- Processing: How has the treat been prepared?
- Size and texture: Does it suit your dog's age, size and chewing style?
Our All Treats collection contains only Australian meat or seafood.
2. βAir-Driedβ Doesn't Tell You the Whole Story
You'll see air-dried dog treats and dehydrated dog treats everywhere.
But there's an important question that's rarely answered:
At what temperature were they dried?
Drying removes moisture and helps keep treats shelf stable. But too much heat can change the meat and reduce its natural goodness β so seeing βair-driedβ on the bag doesn't necessarily tell you how gently the treat was made.
At Barkn'licious, we air-dry our handcrafted range of treats and toppers at no more than 75Β°C.
It takes longer. That's okay.
We choose a low-temperature process to preserve as much of the original ingredients' natural flavour and nutritional goodness as we can.
We'd rather take the extra time and care to do things the right way β and make products we're genuinely proud to put our name on.
So if you're comparing dog treats, don't just ask whether they're air-dried or dehydrated.
Ask what temperature they're dried at.
3. Look at How the Treat Is Prepared
Temperature is only part of the process.
Before our treats even reach the dehydrator:
- our jerky is hand-sliced;
- excess fat is trimmed from beef tendon and trachea; and
- sharp claws are removed from every chicken and duck foot.
Why remove the claws? Because they're sharp.
Why trim excess fat? Because if it doesn't need to be there, we'd rather take the time to remove it.
To us, natural isn't only about the ingredients. It's about the care taken every step of the way.

4. Finding the Right Natural Treat for Your Dog
Different moments call for different treats β from quick training rewards to longer-lasting chews.
Size, texture and chewing time can help you narrow down the best options for your dog.
Natural Training Treats
Choose small, bite-sized treats or ones that are easy to break into smaller pieces, so you can give frequent rewards during training without overfeeding.

Natural Dog Chews
For chewing, choose a treat with enough size and resistance for your dog's chewing style.
Beef tendon, bully sticks, pig ears and other natural chews offer very different textures, nutritional benefits and chewing times. Always choose an appropriate size and supervise your dog while chewing.

Natural Puppy Treats
Puppyhood is an important time for growth and development, making good nutrition especially important. Natural, protein-rich treats can provide valuable nutrients for growing pups, while appropriate chews can also support dental health and mental enrichment.
Every puppy is different, so get to know your pup and choose treats that suit their age, breed, size and chewing ability as they grow and develop. Always supervise chew time.

Low-Fat Dog Treats
Treat time doesn't always have to come with the extra fat.
For dogs who love their snacks, leaner natural treats can be a great way to keep the rewards coming without loading up on unnecessary fat. From light everyday treats to satisfying chews, there are plenty of ways to make treat time feel a little more guilt-free.

Alternative Proteins & Sensitive Tummies
Some pups just don't get along with certain proteins. Duck, pork, lamb and seafood are less commonly associated with food sensitivities, making them great alternatives to explore for sensitive tummies.
And with single-ingredient treats, you know exactly which protein is going into their bowl β or their belly!

If your dog has a diagnosed or suspected food allergy, speak with your vet about appropriate proteins and foods.
5. Choose Natural Dog Treats by Protein
Sometimes you already know what your dog loves β or what you need to avoid. Shopping by protein makes it easier to narrow the choice.
Chicken Dog Treats
From hand-sliced chicken jerky and hearts to necks, wing tips and pedicured chicken feet, chicken offers everything from small rewards to crunchy chews.
Beef Dog Treats & Chews
Beef includes quick rewards such as liver as well as more substantial chews including tendon, trachea and long-lasting bully sticks.
Pork Dog Treats & Chews
Pig ears, snouts, pizzle and liver offer different sizes and textures for rewarding and chewing.
Duck Dog Treats
Duck feet, wings and other duck treats provide another Australian protein choice with a range of crunchy textures.
Seafood Dog Treats
Sardines and natural fish treats offer distinctly different flavours and nutritional value from land-based proteins.
6. What About Fussy Eaters?
Before assuming your dog is simply βfussyβ, consider what changes when you change the protein, aroma or texture.
A crunchy chew, piece of jerky and sardine are completely different eating experiences even though they can all be natural treats.
If it's your dog's everyday meal they're losing interest in, a topper can add a different aroma, flavour and texture without replacing their regular food.
